English antique and vintage pub signs are disappearing along with many of the historical pubs. They were disappearing at the rate of 15 a month, but the latest newspaper article from London mentioned the “pubs are closing at a rate of 18 per week…with nearly 6, 000 pub landlords having gone out of business in the past 4 years.”
Which leads me to my addiction for English pub signs. On my trips to England, I began to hunt for these fabulous bits of “history from the very heart of British society dating back to the Roman empire”. I had noticed that the quaint hand-painted by printed signs and more often by a logo or just a letter. Needless to say, I’ve spent long hours going through greasy garages, attics full of spider webs and more than one dumpster and garbage heap. I really feel that not only am I offering a painting for your wall, but one that has great significance from an historical importance.
These English pub signs are offered to others who can see their charm and enjoy the sense of history they convey.
